Calf bruising: I would be concerned about a blood clot in his leg. This can be quite serious as it could lead to a blood clot in the lungs. Please encourage him to be seen tonight to be evaluated for this, this is truly an emergency.

Hematoma.: No one can be sure without checking the leg, but the description sounds more like a hematoma to me. That is a collection of blood OUTSIDE the vein, and by itself carries no risk of traveling to lung.

Gravity: With a hematoma developing in the back of the leg, gravity will cause the bruising to go to the ankle. Other health issues (easy bleeding) may have be looked into by your primary care doctor.
