Yes: If there was a lot of bleeding, the bruised area is deep and shows up late &gravity pulls the blood downward 2 the ankle & this will, along with some hobbling around will cause the swelling. As long as it was not an ankle injury, the story is typical, so don't worry.

Softball bruise: Yes, thats a very normal consequence of what you described. The blood will move along fascial planes quite far sometimes. It will slowly get better. Heat and elevation might help it resolve a bit faster.
