Maybe indirectly: L5/s1 discs cause low back pain, buttock cramping, and throbbing bone pain in the thigh and calf but not swelling. The swelling might be indirectly related to it if you are not using the leg as the muscles move fluid back towards the heart. You should see your doctor to make sure it's not anything more serious such as a blood clot or fracture
