I work in urgent care - i drain smaller abscesses. do you pack them or not? also, what is the best treatment for 1 & 2 degree burns?

I don't pack them: I think there is decent evidence these days that packing abscesses (especially smaller ones) is just painful and doesn't help much. I will admit that I pack larger ones, for 'good luck' and out of a sense of tradition. For first degree burns and burns on the face - bacitracin, mostly for the vaseline effect. 2nd degree I prefer SSD. Initially applying topical lidocaine gel can make help pain.

Treatment plan: With small abscess, I put a little wick of gauze in there and recheck them in 48 hours. Silvadene (silver sulfadiazine) is the best for superficial burns.
