Why so much: There's no clear benefit to such high doses. In the end, this is a water soluble vitamin so you're unlikely to run into problems, as you should pee most of the extra out. But, at least for men, high dose vitamin C has been shown to increase the risk of kidney stones. You're probably better of keeping the dose in the range of 1000mg or less to be safe.
