Possibly: It is ok to ice it and give him some ibuprofen. If the swelling doesnt go down or the bruising increases or pain intensifies. Then take him for an x ray. I try to avoid them as much as possible in children.

Yes if you can: Because he can still move the finger, it is not likely to be dislocated or broken, but it could be sprained, leading to swelling and bruising. If you can't go to the doctor, you can "buddy-tape" it, meaning wrap a tape or gauze around the finger and its neighboring finger so he won't hurt it by bumping it against something. Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain. It should be better in a week or so. Hope that helps.
