See an MD: Hi, with this little info it's too hard to know what is going on, I would suggest you see your provider for evaluation.

Ecchymosis: This sounds like ecchymosis(bled) from some kind of trauma to the toe. Have your physician examine you if pain and discoloration continue.

Needs medical attn: Hi Jeremy, Discoloration and pain in your toe worries me. It could be as simple as a bruise, but you mentioned it "didn't get hurt". It could be many other things, including an "embolic event"- meaning there a tiny clot of something that prevents good circulation, or an infection. I would encourage you to have it examined as soon as possible. Good luck.

The concern with: purple is a lack of blood supply. Need to determine if its a simple bruise or not. One way to evaluate blood supply is the temp of the area, if it is warm that is a good sign. Is there a pulse in the foot? that is a good sign. if the toe is cold that is not good and needs further evaluation. emboli are a concern as well...
