Common problem: Viruses are a major cause of sore throats and they tend to self resolve over a 1-2 week period.Mono and strep have far more associated problems than the others but once these are excluded,comfort care is the primary treatment.

Follow up with Doc: Follow up with your PCM if you are not improving, particularly if you are running a fever or if your cough is getting worse. Rapid Strep tests are helpful diagnostic tools, but are often falsely negative. A Strep culture is more reliable, but takes 3-4 days for results. Bottom line, if you are feeling worse, your Physician will want to know.
