Sore throat with phlegm for7days &not improving.no runny nose or other cold/flu symptoms.had mono in 2009.strep negative.i feel awful&fatigued.

Viruses are a major cause of sore throats and they tend to self resolve over a 1-2 week period.Mono and strep have far more associated problems than the others but once these are excluded,comfort care is the primary treatment.

Follow up with your PCM if you are not improving, particularly if you are running a fever or if your cough is getting worse. Rapid Strep tests are helpful diagnostic tools, but are often falsely negative. A Strep culture is more reliable, but takes 3-4 days for results. Bottom line, if you are feeling worse, your Physician will want to know.
