Do it correctly!: You should not experience suffocating feeling with flossing. Something is wrong with the technique you are using; so see a dental hygienist to, see if this is the problem. If there's different problem causing sensation, it may be something neurologic, psychological, or some type of hyperactivity of your tongue and other muscles involved with this sensation. C dentist, internist, approp specialist.

Floss holder: If flossing by hand is difficult, try a floss holder that can be purchased at your local drugstore in the toothpaste aisle. Several types exist...Some are pre-threaded with floss and so are disposable. Others are simply a plastic handle that you thread floss onto, use, and discard the floss. Many of my patients like using these another option may be a "water pik"--target and walmart sell them.
