A virus: Ulcers in the mouth can be cuased by virus. Specifically herpes simplex virus, and varicella virus as well as the coxsacki virus. However, the most common cause of mouth ulcers is the apthous (canker sore) ulcer whose parthenogenesis is not completely understood but is not contagious. Any of the virus above can be transmitted via saliva that would be found on a cigarette.
