Sciatica: Difficult to determine without more information. Sciatica is caused by a compressed nerve root exiting from the lumbar spine (low back). Typically sciatic nerve pain begins in the back or hip and runs down the side or back of the leg. In some cases the pain is primarily in the calf. The pain and numbness can extend to the ankle, big toe, little toe, or bottom of the foot too.
