Screening test: A pap smear is a screening test, primarily for detecting pre-malignant (and malignant) lesions of the cervix; however, it can also detect malignancies in other sites such as the uterus, fallopian tube and ovary. Occasionally we can see tumors that have spread from other sites such as breast cancer and melanoma.

PAP: A PAP smear involves using basically a wooden stick to gently scrape off cells from the cervix, and also a cotton swab to obtain cells from the cervical canal. It's main use (99%) is in the realm of cervical cancer, that also includes endometrial cancer. Little value for ovarian cancer diagnosis (Dx). The pelvic exam apart from the PAP, may diagnose vaginal CA, & less likely ovarian, fallopian CA
