Insomnia: Insomnia is a condition such as you have described, characterized by difficulty falling asleep at night. Excessive stimulation before bed, irregular sleep habits, anxiety and worry, caffeine and medications are some common causes. Teenagers can indeed develop insomnia due to melatonin imbalances during puberty.

Signs of Insomnia: Teenagers are prone to insomnia just as adults. If you have any electronic devices the light from the screen can keep you from sleeping even if the sounds is off. Insomnia causes difficulty falling asleep, waking up in the middle of the night or even waking up too early. Most people who have insomnia feel tired when they do wake in the morning due to the few hours of sleep.

Insomnia: Stick to a sleep schedule. Make sure that the bedroom is stimuli free. Avoid television/technology in the bedroom, reading books and eating in the bed. Minimize caffeine close to bedtime. Avoid long naps during the day. If these things are not helping or If the problem becomes persistent, then see your doctor for further evaluation.
