Sometimes: It unknown whether a daily multiple vitamin improves outcomes for patients with chronic disease and we rarely study healthy patients. With a good diet of mostly whole, unprocessed foods, a vitamin may not be necessary. However certain conditions (pregnancy, calorie restriction, athletes) may have increased need for certain vitamins and adding a multiple vitamin daily may have benefits.

Generally wise: I can't speak for other doctors; I know some who feel they are often unnecessary. However, research shows the vast majority of Americans don't get sufficient levels of vitamins and minerals from diet. Even the AMA advises everyone to take a multivitamin due to research showing they can prevent many diseases. I believe it is wise for everyone to take a quality multi. See http://tinyurl.com/mzrkbx8
