Yes, but depends: Vitamins, minerals, protein, fatty acids and water are essential nutrients and are needed for normal function of our bodies. However, we should can get these from what we eat if you know what you are eating. If you are uncertain, you should take vitamins. One example is vit d. It is added to milk and orange juice. But if you don't drink one with the added vit d you may not be getting enough.

Will repeat my skepticism, that most multivitamins have items that are superfluous and obtained from diet, and furthermore, do not get absorbed after ingestion. Consumer groups have tested drugstore multivitamins and often find labels to be misleading. Vitamin D and the B complex are perhaps far more useful on their own. Discuss further with your doctor, who seems to have wisdom.
