Yes it's safe: Modern life actually put you in danger by keeping you out of the sun -- the exposure required to make adequate vitamin D won't do serious skin damage -- and away from fortified and vitamin D rich foods. People's bones can hurt so much just from vitamin D deficiency that they end up at the rheumatologist's; the vulnerability to TB and probably hemorrhage is real as well.
