No preconception: The Teratology Society of the United States recommends that vitamin A supplements or total intake not exceed 8000 IU/d (2400 RE/d) There is no known specific dose that will cause birth defects since studies cannot be ethically performed, but doses greater than 10,000 IU were suspicious in the 20 reported cases of birth defects.
