I C E: Ice, Compression, and Elevation is the best management for a basic ankle sprain. ibuprofen or naproxen would also be helpful for local pain and inflammation. Good luck.

Ankle sprain: RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Use ice at intervals - 15 min on 15 min off. Apply an ace bandage or ankle support - ensure you can move your toes and do not feel numbness. Remove at night. Ibuprofen 400-800mg every 8 hours with food for pain and swelling.

Soak it in ice: Ouch! I would soak it in a tub of ice water for 20 minutes, take some Ibuprofen and wrap it in an ace bandage. Hope you are soon playing basketball again!

Ankle Sprain: If you can't walk on it, you might need an X-ray. At the very basics it's: Rest, Ice, Elevation, & Compression. Aleve (naproxen) 2 tabs twice daily or 4 ibuprofen every 8 hours for at least 3-5 days, perhaps longer if needed. If you can't walk on it, get an X-ray, and try to keep weight off it.

Rest: Ice, Elevate, Support neutral posture with light wrap. If bruiting is significant get an Xray. By the way, after tendon repair, many like to wrap/tape before play, or wear more substantial shoes to avoid excessive motion. Ibuprofen helps pain and inflammation, but use in a ligament tear inhibits healing from the inflammatory process that restores ligament to bone.
