Several things: Two things that come to mind are arthritis or deconditioning. Stiffness is usually a symptom of arthritis but if it came on suddenly it should be checked (bloodwork). Being out if shape also leads to stiffness and soreness. If you are currently not exercising I would begin a gentle walking program as well as yoga or Pilates.
