More information: 1. how bad does it hurt? 2. any discharge? 3. Is it red? 4. any fevers? 5. did it come around suddenly or gradually? 6. how big is it, roughly? 7. is it red to look at? 8. any change in vocie? 9. pain with opening and closing of Jaw or both?

At least seek urgent: Help. You may not need to go to the ER, particularly if you can seek your primary care provider urgently, otherwise, you are right, the ER may be necessary. If you can't eat well or drink then you need to seek help ASAP. This could be from a severely inflammed lymph node or a parotid gland infection/stone, or an abscess. Don't wait too long.

See your doc: See your primary physician instead of going to the ER where at best they could make the diagnosis. Sounds like it could be a parotid (salivary gland) tumor. It might not neccessarily be malignant. Could just be a blocked salivary duct if it came up recently. Don't ignore it. Had one myself which turned out to be malignant.

Go to ER: siolithiasis and parotitis are two common swellings to the side of the face but often require a CT scan to differentiate/diagnose.
