Too much strain from: The sprain causing swelling in the brace used. Need to elevate leg at the end of the day to drain the extra lymphatic fluid so it goes back to your heart. And remain off your sprained foot as much as you can with it elevated throughout most of the day until it heels.

Depends: It can take more than 3 months for swelling to go away in some cases. Even after the ligaments have healed enough to not need support, they are still healing and swelling can persist as a result.
