How do you: Know you didn't break or fracture a bone? I think an x-ray would be prudent. Also, at bare minimum the foot should be braced or immobilized.

Months: You may have more damage than you think. I suggest you get evaluated.

Have it evaluated: Twisting ones’ ankle can lead to a sprained ankle. Often times, this may result in ligament or tendon injuries which may lead to ankle bruising, swelling, pain, and possibly instability. An x-ray of the foot and ankle will be able to assist in differentiating a sprain form a fracture.
