The trophoblast died: Implantation took place, as the trophoblast (which later becomes the placenta) produces HCG, but either the embryo did not form, or died, followed by the trophoblast dying, resulting in the fall of the HCG levels, which is a natural occurrence in humans--only about 1 in 4 to 5 conceptions actually go to term. Over half die because of a multitude of spontaneous chromosomal abnormalities.
