Very sedated: IV sedation can sedate you to where you are not aware of what is going on and therefore feeling no pain or anything. It is not like general anesthesia where you are completely out. Your periodontist can explain and tailor you desires. Most periodontists will do IV sedation or have an anesthesiologist come into their office.

Various degrees: There are various degrees and medications of IV Sedation, ranging from a twilight sleep to being totally out. Actually, one can get total pain relief during implant placement from local anesthesia, but if IV will make your treatment more comfortable- go for it! If your doctor doesn't do it, ask if they can bring in a dental anesthesiologist to assist for your procedure.

Levels: There are levels of anesthesia. IV sedation is just that, sedation and not surgical anesthesia. You will still need local anesthesia while you will be "asleep". Honestly, there us no real need for IV sedation for almost all dental procedures. Ask about sweet air analgesia.

Sedated: IV sedation is just that. You are sedated , but not totally under general anesthesia. However it is possible to be "asleep" or in very deep sedation for a short while as needed and as long as it is safe. If your Dr. does not offer this and you need it , then find another surgeon. Usually Oral Surgeons have this readily available. Work through your restorative Dentist to arrange this. Good Luck.
