During IV sedation: To some, just the thought of having a dental implant placed in their mouth can be very scary. It doesn't have to be this way and IV sedation eliminates that problem. If sedation is administrated by a general dentist, you are awake, but comfortable. If it's done in the oral surgery office, it is a deep sedation and you are asleep.

Usually not aware: When someone is under IV Sedation, they are unaware of what is going on. They also do not feel anything. Under IV sedation, a person enters in a sleep/twilight state. But they do breath on their own.

Sedation varies: Under conscious sedation, the patient is awake but lightly sedated. There are different levels of sedation: conscious, moderate, and deep. With deep sedation, it is unusual to be aware of anything, but it still may happen. Only general anesthesia reliably provides complete unconsciousness. Tolerance varies; a person who uses alcohol or other sedatives will need more sedation.

Depends: Depends on the surgeon and the patient's desires. We do entire mouth tx. in one visit and usually use sedation. However, we have had patients request only local anesthesia.
