Flank pain: Usually pain in the kidneys is manifest with pain flank area or the area of the back on either side just below the ribs.

Pain in the back: Usually kidney pain is intense, one sided, located in the back. The pain can radiate into the groin. Pain can be associated with fevers, chills, difficulty urinating. If you try to jump up and down and you experience pain on one side of your back you may have a kidney infection. When in doubt, see a doctor.

Depends on the cause: Kidneys can hurt for various reasons and the pain can feel different depending on the cause. Generally speaking you have some degree of discomfort on the flank or lower back either on one side or bilaterally .
