Healthy habits: Unless they had it from childhood, they both likely have Type II diabetes, which is from insulin resistance. This is what I like to call a "disease of lifestyle." Your health habits can change your chance of getting diabetes drastically. First, exercise regularly, next, adopt a healthy diet (at least lean meats and vegetables). Vegetarians and Vegans are also far less likely to get diabetes.

Diabetes Prevention: - Healthy diet, including plenty of water and fiber. - Avoid alcohol and don't smoke. - Exercise for 30 minutes daily. - Maintain a healthy weight - if necessary reduce weight. - Talk to your doctor about risk reduction and screening for pre diabetes. - There are websites, government/university/ADA, with excellent tools to help you evaluate your risk and decrease your chances for developing DM.
