A member asked:

Can you tell me in the case of thalassemia intermedia, is the gene inherited from *both* parents, or only one?

Thalassemia: Thalassemia intermedia is a description, and not a pathological or genetic diagnosis. Although frequently the genes come from both parents, that is not a requirement. Generally, patients with thalassemia intermedia have significant anemia, but are able to survive without blood transfusions.
