Gingivitis: the first stage of periodontal disease is inflammation of the gum tissue. this is in response to a buildup of biofilm. if the biofilm is not removed regularly, the waste product from the bacteria will penetrate the gum tissue and cause an inflammatory response-red, puffy, bleeding gums. consistent home care and regular professional cleanings will prevent this.
