Just ask!: Always feel free to ask your doctor the reasoning behind treatment decisions. It may be the case that your symptoms are unlikely to be improved with antibiotics. Remember, antibiotics only treat bacteria and don't touch viruses. So if you have a viral infection (very common), all you would be doing is potentially making the bacteria that you already have more resistant to future antibiotics.
