A member asked:

What happens if a smoker's lung, the simple squamous et is replaced w/ stratified et, why is it bad?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

While I don't: understand the molecular biology of it, chronic irritation of respiratory (and other kinds of) epithelium results in metaplastic changes - making stratified squamous epithelium - prior to developing neoplastic changes in individual cells - the production of malignant cells. If this is you, it is time to quit. Help is available.
