"ganglion" cyst: Most such masses at the base of the finger on the palm side are cysts along the tendon. They are due to weak area within the wall of the sheath around the tendon that bulge out, much like a weak spot in an inner tube. They can change in size, bigger and then smaller. They can be removed, but often will resolve all by themselves (I had one in the exact same place, disappeared after a year).
