When is the risk of bleeding after an tonsillectomy @adenoids removed in a child, how quickly does a child need emergency intervention?

Roughly 5-10%: Most kids who have post-op bleeding following a T&A don't need emergency intervention. If the bleeding is brisk, causes the child to vomit, or is associated with symptoms such as dizzy/weak/light-headed, then go to ER. Otherwise, call surgeon when office opens today and talk to the surgeon who did the surgery.

Immediately,: Bleeding after a tonsillectomy can be a very dangerous situation. Often the amount is hidden because the blood is swallowed. Also the airway can become compromised. That is the reason the frequency of this surgery has decreased

Post op bleeding: The estimated risk is about 4-5%. It tends to occur between 5-10 days, more common in summer months. Most cases can be treated with ice chips in mouth and bleeding stops in 10-15 minutes. Severe and recurrent bleeding requires a trip back to operating room for control of bleeding.
