Several choices: While lithium and valproic acid have strong clinical evidence, they do require blood monitoring. Lamotrigine is a popular medication which typically does not, and there are other anticonvulsants people use with vary degrees of scientific evidence in bipolar disorder. The atypical antipsychotics as a class don't, but all require close monitoring for potentially serious adverse reactions.
