Will plantar fasciitis go away on it's own, or must it be taken care of by a podiatrist?

Plantar Fasciitis : The Plantar Fasciitis doesn't go away by itself but you certainly can make it go away by doing stretch exercises specific for plantar fasciitis. I'll provide you with a link about exercises. Also losing weight if your are overweight might help. See a Podiatrist if the exercises didn't help. Get evaluated: See your local Podiatrist for an evaluation. I suggest physical therapy, stretching, icing (10 minutes on/5 off), custom inserts, anti-inflammatory meds. There are also injections which can be done by a Podiatrist which may be effective.
