Color of stool: Blood in stool may be black, tarry when related to an upper tract (between mouth and upper third of small bowel) or bright red/burgundy if is more distal such as lower third of small bowel colon or rectum. Other shades of yellow or orange may be due to food dyes or simply bile as it is also secreted in the small bowel lumen and eventually expelled. Laxatives certainly increase your transit time.
