Wear gloves when working in grassy areas or in the garden. Not advisable to be sitting or lying down on grass where fireants may be present Always wear shoes and socks when you are outside in an area where fire ants are known to reside.you should have an epi-pen with you at all times

If you get fire any bites slice an onion and rub it on them. It neutralizes the effects and reduces swelling, pain, and the overall reaction.

Yes: Agree w dr. Sojico. You may not see the mounds. Be cautious if walking or working around areas covered by pine needles or other ground cover. Be especially careful when lifting up objects which have been in place for a while as there may be mounds or ants beneath them. One ant can sting you repeatedly. If covered w ants a fairly high powered hose can help to spray them off.

Great answer. I would add showering before bed, rinsing out the nose and even using a neti pot - especially if you've been outside doing sports, mowing lawn, gardening, etc. Just so you're not going to bed with dirt, allergens still on your body.

Lots of resources: Start with family members who have allergies. I like to say that "noses run in families" (allergy joke). So who's helping them with their allergies? Next your primary care physician - a trustworthy, knowledgeable resource. You can call your county medical society for names or find an allergist at www.Aaaai.Org & www.Acaai.Org. Think twice about those who advertise.

About 1 in 200: A 2004 study by scott sicherer et al pegged an overall rate of seafood allergy in the us at a little over 2% - that's one in 50. Most of that allergy was reported for shellfish. The rate of fish allergy was 0.6% - less than 1 in a 100 and closer to 1 in 200 persons.

Depends: For seasonal allergy patients, starting one's seasonal allergy medications a couple of weekd before the season starts can be helpful. For those with cat or dog allergy and going to visit a house with cat or dog, one one can start to take one's medication a week or so before hand.
