Wisdom tooth: Why is the dentist "working on" a wisdom tooth? Most are functionless teeth in poor position which are best removed as they are quite difficult to clean, even if in good position. The fact that you have the other symptoms means that an infection is likely and careful evaluation is necessary. Abscessed teeth are one thing to try to "fix", but an infected abscess wisdom tooth is best removed.
