Congestion: Newborns are nose breathers and develop a lot of mucus. Therefore, it is important to use a bulb syringe to suck up the mucus. You can also use salt water nose drops several times a day. A cool steam vaporizer is helpful as is an elevated mattress

Can be: Most newborns are a little congested. They only breath thru there noses. I generally recommend saline drops and suction as needed if it's effecting his feeding or sleep. Cough, lethargy, irritability, fever and poor feeding are all signs of a more severe problem. I'd recommend calling your pediatrician if you have any concerns about his behavior.

?irritants?: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment & this will happen less.
