Not normal: No, this is not a common occurrence and can be very serious, requiring surgery. It can be due to a number of things, more commonly due to spontaneous rupture of surface varicose veins on the uterus or sometimes a uterine artery. Other causes are possible too- did they give you any indication at all where the bleed was coming from or suggest treatment to correct it?
