It happens: The blood vessels that are part of the cord were the blood supply for baby. Occasionally the cord separation is delayed and or there may be persistent leaking at the site. I routinely cauterized these in the office with silver nitrate, which stops all bleeding & speeds up healing. Wiping the area down with rubbing alcohol & blowing it dry can help in the short term.
