Mittelschmerz : Not uncommonly, ovulation produces discomfort that we refer to as mittelschmertz (from the german meaning "middle pain"). The spotting is caused by the sudden decrease in estrogen, which is normal as the follicle transitions into a corpus luteum. Both are considered "normal variants".
