Tooth abscess: Yes, penicillin V is an excellent choice for tooth abscess. It is standard therapy.

ER: The ER will dispense antibiotics to help control your infection, but you need to get back to the dentist for definitive care ASAP. The antibiotic will not solve your problem.

About right: Penicillin v potassium is indicated in the treatment of mild to moderately severe infections due to penicillin G-sensitive microorganisms.However, antibiotics alone may not cure a dental infection they will only help reduce the severity. See your dentist for definitive examination, x-rays and treatment.
