Bacterial infections: Bacterial infections can elevate the white blood cell count cell line of a cbc blood test. Viral infections do not elevate the white cell count but on rare occasions can lower it. Sub type of cells (part of the CBC) can differentiate bacterial from viral. Lymphocytes increase for viral infections. Neutrophils increase for Bacteral infections.
