Have new guidelines : The latest guidelines do not recommend HCTZ. There are risks with HCTZ such as poor glucose control and arrythmias from low magneisum and potassium. Low dose HCTZ can potentiate effects of ACE inhibitors and medicines such as Benicar, (olmesartan) but sodium restriction important. Assuming no other issues, BP control under 140/90 acceptable.
