I was taking 20 mg of buspirone a day for about 6 weeks and do not feel like i need to take it anymore. can it be stopped abruptly?

No: No psychiatric medication should be stopped abruptly and stopping such medications should be done carefully with physician supervision. Buspirone (Buspar) is approved for anxiety and is used to augment depression medications. You may be on too low of a dose, usual starting dose is 10 mg three times per day. Talk to your MD about its lack of effectiveness and discuss a taper or a dose increase.

Preferably no....: Sudden stopping may cause rebound problems so the best is to taper it down by 5 mgm at a time - taking it only 6 weeks makes it less likely there will be problems.
