How are mri below the knee performed? doctor said a pillow will be under my legs, but i find this odd and believe it should only be under the heels.

MRI knee : There are established protocol for each test. Please cooperate with the radiologist and technician or the MRI images may not come out as desired and may cause additional cost and discomfort to repeat it.

Neutral position: For joint exams, it is best to see the joint in a neutral-nonstressed position. Because of the contours of the muscles in your leg,gentle support under the knee(with pillow/roll)will keep the knee more neutral and allow visualization of the tissues around the knee. A pillow under the knee would hyperextend the knee-causing stress and less visibility certain soft tissue components of the joint.
