I can't find statistics on this.. about how common are tooth abscesses? i had a severe one and i never can find anyone else that had one

Varies tremendously: Depending on populations level of dental care. In my pediatric dental practice it is about 1 in 600. Sometimes we will go for months without seeing one and the next month we will 2 or 3. Statistics are not what is important. What is important is having your abscess treated and improving your home care so that you do not get any more.

Very common: Study by Boykin et al., "In the United States, despite a generally dentally motivated population a large prospective study reported that 13% of adult patients sought treatment for dental pain and infection over a 24 month follow-up and in the US hospital admissions relating to acute dental infections are estimated to occur at rate of 1 per 2600 head of population per year.
