How about both: Lay off doing them for a couple of days until you feel better and than ask someone to show you the proper way to do them so that you do not hurt yourself.

Pain in your chest : Regardless the reason crunches or muscle pain. The pain in your chest is a serious medical condition. It is always a red flag and appointment with your PCP for evaluation or a cardiologist is warranted. Take care.
