A member asked:

Started taking 50mg of antenolol once a day, 4 days ago for hbp. if i stop taking it now will i suffer through the withdraws (eg. chest pain, etc..) or have i not taken it that long for my body to become dependent on it.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Must be tapered down: Atenolol should never be suddenly stopped when using it for hypertension. You must consult your treating physician on how he/she wants you to taper down- usually a taper might be 50mgx 2 days, 25 mg for 2 days , then 25mg every other day x 2 days, then off ( as an example ). Stopping suddenly like you just did can cause your BP to spike.
